Reconstruction: The Missing Piece of the Digital Twin Puzzle

The industrial "Digital Twin" is often a misnomer; while these models track data well, their spatial geometry is usually outdated or disconnected from reality. For robots, drones, and AI to operate safely, they need reconstruction, not just telemetry. By converting sensor data into metric 3D representations (meshes, Gaussian splats, and localization maps), organizations can create a "spatial backbone" that stays current, ensuring that machines and humans are always working from the same, accurate map.

Ground Truth: Visual Positioning With VPS 2.0 When GPS Fails

GPS is fragile. In urban canyons signals bounce and positions drift. Indoors they can vanish. Underground and in rugged terrain they often disappear entirely. And in an increasingly common set of scenarios – from conflict zones to critical infrastructure – signals can be jammed or spoofed entirely. Niantic Spatial’s Visual Positioning System (VPS), a key service powered by the Large Geospatial Model we are building, is designed to solve these challenges. Today, we’re introducing VPS 2.0.

By combining high-fidelity Gaussian splats with VPS 2.0, the system provides centimeter-accurate localization that functions even in GPS-denied environments. This foundational technology allows robotics, construction teams, and AI developers to navigate, reconstruct, and interact with complex physical spaces at a global scale.
